Murphy beds make a multipurpose room a guest room

The client came to the interior designer Laura Casey with a space dilemma: they didn\'t want to give up the room at home in the suburbs, but they needed a place for the kids to play.
Kathy came up with a solution that is often used in small urban apartments: a Murphy bed.

Not only are studio apartments, many families have saved money.
\"This is an interesting trend,\" said Chris Fahy, vice president of Bedway.
In Indiana, sales of Murphy beds have increased in recent years.
Many customers, he said, are baby boomers, empty nesters, and other homeowners who want to turn their bedrooms into hobby rooms or gyms but still need a place suitable for adult children, grandchildren or other guests sleep.
The price of Fahy\'s Murphy bed ranges from $1,300 to $3,100.
Ginny Snook Scott, vice president of sales and marketing, said California Closets also produce custom wall beds, and the same upward trend has emerged.
Customers still buy Murphy beds for studio apartments and holiday homes, she said, but many others want to get more use out of the extra rooms.
The company has designed vertical and horizontal Murphy beds, usually incorporating them into Cabinet units in the Home Office or craft room.
The price of simple wall beds and desks ranges from $3,000 to $20,000 for custom items with extensive cabinets.
The support varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, but usually the mattress is wrapped in a frame pulled out of the Cabinet attached to the wall.
Fahy said the improved mechanism for lowering and increasing beds today makes the process easy for one person.
Beds designed by Kathy for her clients do not include piston or spring mechanisms, which are used by most manufacturers to lower the beds to the floor.

She has a carpenter building and her design doesn\'t look like a cabinet.
The bed was carved in by a man-made wall.
When not in use, the bed looks like a sofa with a shelf on it.
In order to reveal the bed, the homeowner removed the sofa mat and pulled it to the shelf, which caused the man-made wall to fall to the floor.
This wall is really the Queen\'s platform. size mattress.
The shelf becomes the support of the foot of the bed.
This is the first time Kathy has recommended Murphy bed to clients.
