Tatami originated in the Han Dynasty of China, and developed and prevailed in the Sui and Tang Dynasties. During the Tang Dynasty, it spread to Japan and South Korea. There are tatami mats in the ancient tombs of the royal family in Xi'an.

After the Tang Dynasty, stools and high-footed beds prevailed, and tatami mats gradually declined in China.
