The difference between tatami and bed

Author: Synwin–Mattress Manufacturer

Tatami originated in the Han Dynasty of China, and developed and prevailed in the Sui and Tang Dynasties. During the Tang Dynasty, it spread to Japan and South Korea. There are tatami mats in the ancient tombs of the royal family in Xi'an.

After the Tang Dynasty, stools and high-footed beds prevailed, and tatami mats gradually declined in China. Tatami is mostly woven from rush grass, and it is a kind of furniture that is spread on the ground all year round for people to sit or lie down. It is mainly a wooden structure, with a little description, as a whole, it is like a "horizontal" cabinet with doors.

Most of the tatami in ordinary families are designed on the floor of the room, study or hall. The first is the economy. It can function as a bed, rug, stool or sofa.

For a room of the same size, the cost of laying "tatami" is only three to four times that of a Western-style arrangement. The second is the efficient use of space. In the case of a small room, if you do not place beds, tables and chairs, etc., it will save a lot of space.

This is in line with the fact that the Japanese territory is small. Sitting on a soft sofa for a long time will relax the muscles of the legs, buttocks and waist. Sitting on the "tatami" muscles will be in a tense state, and there will be no worries of muscle relaxation. A professor published research results in the newspaper and pointed out that the aroma of grass emitted by "tatami" is beneficial to the human body.

Tatami mats are closely associated with both Shinto religious rituals and tea ceremonies in Japan, and many Japanese families still have at least one room with tatami mats in their houses. In addition to "kang mat" and "carpet", Japanese tatami is also "a ruler". In Japan, no matter where you go, each tatami is the same size.

"Tatami" is written as "畳" in Chinese characters, and it is also translated as "grass mat" or "grass mat", but it is not exact. It is brighter and flatter than a straw mat, thicker and firmer than a straw mat. Traditional Japanese rooms do not have beds, nor do they use tables, chairs, benches, etc.

This "tatami", sleep on it at night, put away the futon during the day, eat and carry out various activities on it. The guests came, sat on it, drank tea and talked. Therefore, when entering a Japanese home, be sure to take off your shoes.

Not taking off your shoes is like stepping on our Chinese bed with shoes on. Japanese people like "tatami" very much. Once, a TV program was broadcast: Dozens of families raised funds to build an apartment. The reporter interviewed one of them and asked what they were dissatisfied with the house. Lack of a "tatami" room.

Modern Japan has absorbed Western architectural methods, and the room configuration has been very different from the past. Especially in big cities, most people live in unit housing. But "tatami" is still loved by people.

Most households in Japan are "Japanese and Western": there are both Western-style rooms with sofas, coffee tables, cabinets, beds and tables, and Japanese-style rooms with "tatami". Most Japanese are still reluctant to sit on the sofa, preferring to kneel on the ground. A Japanese lady told me.

If I don't sit on the "tatami", I always feel that my mood is unstable. "Tatami" is not only laid in homes, but also in public places such as movie theaters and auditoriums. The Japanese listen to reports, watch movies, sit cross-legged, and stay motionless for hours. It is really admirable for their sitting skills.

"Tatami" is also a kind of handicraft. There is a "tatami" museum in Japan, which displays tables and chairs, coffee tables, screens, hanging paintings, etc. made of "tatami" materials. Choose Synwin, choose a mattress with confidence: Foshan Mattress Factory.
