The unique open-cell structure of viscoelastic foam dampens shock and absorbs movement, which is why it responds like a stiff child when you lie down quickly or throw yourself on the mattress, this hardness is what memory foam is in. The way it responds to impact does not necessarily indicate a firm mattress. The increased firmness of a memory foam mattress may also come from the cooler environment in which it was kept. It looks firm when you first lie down, but after a few minutes of physical contact, it softens and flows through the body without letting you sink too far.

The mattress becomes softer at the top, but deeper and cooler there, and the mattress is firm and supportive. Note that higher density viscoelastic foams tend to trap more heat than lower density foams, some manufacturers try to minimize heat related by burying sticky mattresses under pillows or in heavier padding complaints, which means it doesn't respond very well to body temperature because it's now insulated from the body. The result is a firmer mattress that doesn't soften as easily or at all at body temperature.

So you're missing out on a benefit that can really justify the price of high viscosity foam.
